Collin Veijer has made such an impression in his debut season in Moto3 that his contract with the German team Intact GP has been extended by a year. The only 18-year-old Dutchman is happy with the appreciation that the team expresses in him, but wants to do even better next year. He also gets a new teammate.
The Moto3 class is the entry-level class, comparable to Formula 3 in car racing. The transition from Moto3 to Moto2 and then to MotoGP is a common career path for riders in the Motorcycle Racing World Championship. Veijer is not that far yet, although he showed fantastic things in his debut season in Moto3. He once took pole position, finished fourth, fifth and sixth and at the Buddh International Circuit in India he even seemed likely to end up on the podium. In the penultimate corner he touched his teammate Ayumu Sasaki in a fierce three-man fight, after which Veijer crashed.
However, Veijer will no longer be bothered by Sasaki next year. The 23-year-old Japanese will compete in Moto2 next year. His 26-year-old compatriot Tatsuki Suzuki, still active for Leopard Racing in Moto3, will replace Sasaki at Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP, as the team is fully called. Suzuki won the second race of the current season, but did not achieve an appealing result after that and is now only fifteenth in the rankings.
“I am very happy to be working with this team again next year,” says Veijer about his contract extension. “I think we're doing quite well at the moment and I hope we can continue this next year. I'm very happy that the team believes in me, so hopefully we can do even better in 2024. I am very grateful to all the sponsors who make this possible. I'm already looking forward to next year and I hope we can continue our work. I would like to thank everyone involved, but especially my sponsors, my family and friends.”
